Download Spots
==============

Puts new downloads in spots you choose on your desktop.

It watches folders you pick (Downloads to start with). When a file has
finished arriving in one, Download Spots moves it to the Desktop and puts
its icon in the first free spot, in reading order: top row left to right,
then the next row down. When every spot is taken, the file either stays
where it arrived or goes into one folder you choose.

Only new files move. What's already there stays put.

Download Spots used to be called File Parker. If you had that version, open
its page from the tray and choose Uninstall... before building this one. If
it's still around, Download Spots says so when it starts.

It never deletes your files
---------------------------
- Nothing is overwritten. A taken name becomes "name (2).ext".
- Full spots never push anything out.
- Moving to another drive: it copies first, checks the copy, and only then
removes the original. Any failure leaves the original where it was.
- Files still downloading or being written wait until they're finished.
- Only new files count. Anything already in a folder when Download Spots
starts watching it, anything you rename there, and anything saved again
in place is left alone. Folders are never moved.
- It won't watch the Desktop or a OneDrive folder.
- Every move goes into a plain log: Move log, on the page.

Before you start
----------------
Spots need the desktop's grid: "Auto arrange icons" off and "Align icons
to grid" on (right-click the desktop, open View). If either is wrong, the
page says which, and Fix it switches them for you.

Build (once)
------------
1. Put this folder where it will live, e.g. C:\Tools\DownloadSpots.
"Start with Windows" points at this location.
2. Double-click build.bat. It uses the C# compiler that ships with Windows,
so nothing needs installing. It builds DownloadSpots.exe and starts it.

Use
---
Click the tray icon (an arrow landing on a spot) to open the page. Click
Close, click anywhere else, or press Esc to close it.

Moon / sun, top right light or dark; the choice carries over to Mouse
Parker and Hide All if you have them
  On / Off                the line under it says what happened last;
Move log opens the full list
Watch the folders it watches; x removes one,
                          Add folder adds one
Choose spots covers the screen with your desktop grid: click
cells to choose them, click again to remove,
Enter saves, Esc cancels. Numbers show the order
                          they fill in.
Show spots blinks your spots with their numbers
When spots are full leave the file where it arrived, or move it into
a folder you pick (one on the Desktop works too)
Start with Windows switched on the first time it runs

Without a mouse: Tab or the arrow keys move between controls, Enter or
Space uses one, and Page Up, Page Down, Home and End scroll when the page
is taller than the screen. The page also describes its controls to screen
readers such as Narrator.

A spot blinks when a file lands in it, unless the desktop icons are hidden
(by Hide All, for instance). Choose no spots and pick a folder under "When
spots are full" to send everything straight into that folder.

Quick test
----------
1. Choose two or three spots and press Enter.
2. Download any small file in your browser.
3. A few seconds after the download finishes, the file appears in spot 1
   and the spot blinks.

If a file ever lands beside its spot instead of on it (on a second monitor,
say), the move log says exactly where it went and where it should have.

Uninstall
---------
Open the page and choose Uninstall... After you confirm, it removes its
startup entry, settings and move log, closes, and a few seconds later
deletes its own files (DownloadSpots.exe, DownloadSpots.cs,
DownloadSpots.ico, build.bat, README.txt). The folder goes too if that
leaves it empty; anything else in it is left alone. Files it has moved stay
where they are.
